History

Raja Bahadur Venkatram Reddy College of Pharmacy traces its origins to RBVRR Women’s College and Hyderabad Mahila Vidya Sangam (HMVS), institutions established with a strong commitment to women’s education and empowerment. The college is named in honor of Raja Bahadur Venkatram Reddy, who served as the Commissioner of Police in the erstwhile Hyderabad State under the rule of the Nizam. This naming stands as a tribute to his exceptional contributions to society, particularly in advancing women’s education.
Born on August 22, 1869, in Rayanpet in present-day Wanaparthy, Venkatram Reddy came from a modest background. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his uncle, William Wahab, whose influence played a key role in shaping his character and ambitions. Despite facing opposition from relatives, he pursued education with determination and developed a lifelong passion for learning.
In recognition of his service to the state, the Nizam conferred upon him the title “Raja Bahadur.” His contributions also earned him international recognition when he was awarded the Order of the British Empire by the King of England for his efforts in resolving labor-related issues. A statue erected in his honor in Hyderabad reflects the rare distinction accorded to a police officer.
Beyond his administrative career, Raja Bahadur Venkatram Reddy was a visionary educationist. He worked tirelessly to promote literacy across the Telangana region and advocated for the use of Telugu as a medium of instruction. He paid special attention to improving educational access for girls, particularly in backward areas. His pioneering vision led to the establishment of a women’s college as early as 1949, laying the foundation for future institutions.
